Behind the Shot: Hot Air Balloons from Acton Peninsula

Though I wouldn’t typically identify as a “morning person”, I have a propensity for hauling myself out of bed early when suitably motivated. Whether that’s for a Dawn Patrol backcountry ski mission, coffee with friends, or just to ensure I arrive at work on time. I missed the Canberra Balloon Spectacular in 2020 and no amount of desperate craving for a sleep-in was going to get in the way for 2021.

With the knowledge from previous years that the southern side of Lake Burley Griffin would be bustling with activity, I parked near the National Museum at Dawn and took the time to scope out a few possible shots. I focused mainly on shots looking vaguely South back towards the launch site of the Balloon Spectacular. As the balloons drifted West at the mercy of the morning’s gentle winds, I turned my attention to a previously identified spot looking out over the Molonglo Valley. After most of the morning rowers had moved past, I happened to catch the moment this four-person crew passing in front just as the bright yellow CBR Balloon spun to show off its livery in full.
